Common applications for sealed lead acid batteries

Sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries are ubiquitous and used for may applications. For commercial customers, the most common uses are:

  • Security panels – Every security panel typically has an SLA battery. 12V 7AH batteries with T1 terminals are the most common. Sometimes we find 12V 12AH or 12V 18AH batteries in security panels.
  • Uninterruptable power supplies (UPS). Small desk UPS batteries generally have 1 SLA battery, typically 12V 7AH with T2 terminals. Larger office UPS have perhaps either multiple 12V 7A batteries, or one or more 12V 12AH or 12V 18AH batteries. The APC 2200, a popular stand-alone large office UPS has 4 of 12V 18AH batteries
  • Emergency Lighting – Emergency lights typically use 6V as 5AH, 12V 4AH, or 12V AH batteries.

Are sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries from different manufacturers interchangeable?

Yes! SLA batteries are largely interchangeable among manufacturers. However, they do have different operating specs to pay attention to. The same form factor comes in different capacities. For example, 12V 7AH, 12V 8AH, and 12V 9 AH batteries are all the same size. You do have to pay attention to terminals on the batteries. In this same example, these batteries have F1 (narrower) or F2 (wider) connection tabs.

Disposing of sealed lead acid batteries

By Pennsylvania law, all lead acid batteries must be recycled. They good news is that they generally are. If you have any lead acid batteries to recycle in the Pittsburgh region, we are happy to help you. Ways to contact us are here.

How often do I change SLA batteries?

For our recommendations on how option to replace SLA batteries, see here.

Is it safe to charge SLA batteries with an automotive 12V battery charger?

Yes, it is generally safe to recharge SLA batteries with an automotive 12V battery charger. One caveat, if the SLA battery is well beyond it’s service life and can no longer be brought up to full voltage, a powerful charger will not only cause the battery swell, but for the case to rupture and the battery to vent. That ruins your days, as the battery vents sulfuric acid. Always charge lead acid batteries in ventilated areas.

Other SLA batteries we can order

While we lead with EnerSys SLA batteries (Genesus NP line) and ULTRAPOWER SLA batteries, we also can order C&D SLA batteries (Dynasty line) , CS3 SLA batteries, and FIAMM SLA batteries for you. Here is more about each of these battery lines
