Buying the Best Golf Cart Batteries for Your Application

What brands of golf cart batteries does PGH Batteries sell?

We sell Trojan and Crown flooded batteries.   We also have available Crown and Fullriver AGM batteries.  We sell mostly flooded batteries, and most of our customers request Trojan batteries.  Fullriver can be thought as a super-premium brand. Crown batteries are manufactured in Ohio. They are our most cost effective brand. Crown has always made deep cycle batteries that perform well.

What is important in selecting golf cart batteries?

Looking to buy the best golf cart batteries for your application in Pittsburgh? We can help! In this post we describe the brands we sell – Trojan, Crown, and Fullriver – and what golf cart or deep cycle battery to buy for your application. In addition to golf carts, these batteries are used for recreational vehicles and off-grid solar as well as these commercial applications: lifts, floor scrubbers, reserve power, backup power, oil and gas, and commercial carts. These batteries all have a standard form factor. For 6V batteries, the form factor is BCI GC2

When you call, we walk you through golf cart battery selection by application:

Recreation – Carts used in a campground or at your house.   For this application we recommendation Trojan”black box” batteries (branded ULTRAPOWER regionally) over T105, or even the similar capacity T05.  The ULTRAPOWER have 2 main differences (1) less rugged plastic (just don’t drop them during installation!),  (2) less sophisticated sediment management in the bottom of the battery as it ages.  The sad truth is, most recreational owners do not perform enough maintenance on their batteries, leading to “battery abuse”.   The benefits of owning the T105 or T605 only come in the last year or two of ownership.  And if you abuse the batteries, you never get that value back out.  Therefore ULTRAPOWER are the best  batteries for recreational use.

Commercial – For use in cart on golf courses, campuses, and other every day commercial applications we recommend the flagship battery each battery manufacturer recommends for golf courses and similar applications. For Trojan, this is the T105.

Sweeper /Scrubber Batteries – Batteries for sweepers and scrubbers that are heavily used are beefier than the commercial batteries we sell. For Trojan for 6V batteries, this the T125. For moderate use in sweepers and scrubbers, we often sell commercial application batteries (i.e. T105) to cost conscious customers.

We mostly sell Trojan batteries, as it is a well-known brand.  Crown is another respected brand that is more cost effective.  Crown batteries are manufactured in Ohio. Fullriver is a super premium brand of AGM batteries. We can supply Trojan and Crown AGM batteries as well.

Do I have 6v, 8v or 12v golf cart batteries?

Count the number of fluid caps on your battery and multiply it by 2.

               3 caps X 2 = 6V battery

               4 caps X 2 = 8V battery

               6 caps X 2 = 12V battery

How long do golf cart batteries last?

Typically 5 years. If you run them to failure, perhaps 7 years. How can I make my golf cart batteries last longer?  (1) Check their water levels regularly and top them off (i.e. cover the plates) with distilled water only.  (2) Never let them sit discharged in freezing weather.  They can freeze.

Which is better, flooded or AGM (I.e. maintenance free batteries)?

Well, it depends.  Properly maintained, in deep cycle applications flood batteries last twice as long as AGM batteries at half the cost.  The problem is, people don’t maintain their batteries (by watering them) and they die early. One time it really makes sense to use AGM deep cycle batteries is in non-ventilated areas.  Flooded batteries vent hydrogen, so they cannot be used in non-ventilated areas.

Can I use car batteries for my golf cart?

Using car batteries in golf carts is a really bad idea. Golf cart batteries are deep cycle batteries, built to be deeply discharged and charged many cycles. On the other hand, car batteries are built to provide a short burst of current to start a car when fully charged. Deeply discharging and recharging car batteries quickly destroys them.

Why are my golf cart batteries swollen?

Sadly, your golf cart batteries froze. A fully charged battery doesn’t freeze until -90F. A totally discharged battery freezes at 32F, the same as water. That is because what is what is in a fully discharged battery. Key point: At 50% charge and lower, you are in danger of freezing your golf cart batteries in Pennsylvania. Make sure your golf cart batteries are fully charged before the temperature drops!

How do you store golf cart batteries?
